Travelling full time and exploring this incredible country is a true privilege. The freedom to pivot, change direction on a whim, and embrace the unexpected is something we never take for granted. It’s a lifestyle that constantly challenges us—but rewards us in ways we never imagined.
Lessons Learned
- Set realistic expectations. You simply can’t see everything—and that’s okay. There’s always a next time, and that mindset takes the pressure off the journey.
- Expect the unexpected. There are so many variables when travelling, and weather has easily been our biggest challenge. Our Plenty Highway experience proved that even when conditions seem fine, things can change in the blink of an eye.
- Choose experiences wisely. Tourist attractions can be expensive. We’ve learned to prioritise immersing ourselves in nature and local communities, and only spend where it truly adds value—whether that’s deepening our understanding of a place or ticking off something meaningful to us.
Lowlights
- Preparation is everything in remote travel. If you plan to slow down and take your time, you need to be well stocked. Groceries and essential services are limited and often very expensive in remote areas. We’ve learned (the hard way) to overestimate supplies rather than underestimate—resorting to pantry staples more than once!
- Camp plans don’t always go to plan. Finding suitable camps—especially for larger rigs—can be a challenge. Camps may be closed, unsafe, or simply not as described on apps. “Plan B” has become a regular part of our vocabulary.
Camping & Accommodation
As we’ve ventured further into remote areas, free camping and low-cost sites have become our go-to. That said, we occasionally opt for caravan parks—for safety, a reset, or simply to have a secure base while we explore.
One thing we’ve learned: don’t expect value to match price in remote areas or major tourist hubs. Costs can be high regardless of the facilities on offer.
Highlights
- Gaining insight into the cattle industry. Time spent in the Longreach region, including a visit to the Roma Saleyards, gave us a deeper appreciation of the journey from paddock to plate and the scale of Australia’s beef industry.
- Tackling the Outback Way. A long-time bucket list adventure—often called Australia’s longest shortcut—and it absolutely delivered. From vast, ever-changing landscapes to the sense of isolation, culture, and history, it’s been one of the most rewarding journeys we’ve undertaken.
