Month 6

If there’s one thing this journey keeps teaching us… it’s this: plans are just a guide. Things will change — often. And when they do, that’s where the magic tends to happen. Every town, no matter how small or remote, has a story waiting to be uncovered… and often those unexpected stops become the most memorable.

Distance travelled = 14,052 kms

Lessons Learned

  • Expect the unexpected — and lean into it
  • Air down, plan ahead and be prepared — remote tracks demand respect, especially towing
  • Listen to locals — when they say rain is coming, they mean it
  • Slow down — the real magic is often found off the main road
  • Get amongst it — tourist spots give you context, but exploration gives you connection
  • Stay curious — every place adds another piece to the bigger picture

We’ve found some of our best moments haven’t been the “must-see” attractions, but the quiet walks, bike rides through backstreets, and those random encounters — from brolgas overhead to a snake sunning itself on the track. It’s all part of it.

Lowlights

  • Fuel prices still fluctuate wildly in remote areas — finding the best price has become a daily task
  • A suspension recall saw us pivot plans (again), detouring to Berri instead of continuing north
  • Everyday life admin on the road isn’t always simple — things like haircuts, servicing, and post require planning ahead

Camping & Accommodation

We’ve mixed it up more than expected — from free camps to resorting to paid stays for reasons such as;

  • Convenience: accessing services or waiting out weather (like being chased off the Darling during rain)
  • Safety: some areas are better suited to secure stays
  • Experience: station stays and Hipcamps have given us incredible, more personal insights into life on the land

Highlights

The Yorke Peninsula delivered in every way — quiet Easter camps, rugged coastlines, and sunsets that stopped us in our tracks.

Exploring the Copper Triangle added another layer of history we didn’t expect.

And finally… ticking off the Darling River Run.

A bucket-list trip that absolutely lived up to it — iconic towns, rich history, station life, and a track that kept us on our toes. Even with rain forcing us to retreat, it’s an experience we won’t forget anytime soon.

Round Up

Slow down. Stay flexible. Be prepared.

But most of all — stay curious.

Because this country… it’s not just meant to be seen.

It’s meant to be experienced.
